NOTE:

  • Canoes, paddles, pfd's and helmets will be supplied by the Red Cross.
  • All students must provide all other items, such as; sun screen, hats, jackets, water, lunch, extra clothes, etc.
  • Location of classes are tentative only and are subject to change.
  • Students will be contacted about 2 weeks prior to each class.
  • Classes may be cancelled 14 days prior if there are less than 6 students enrolled. This may not apply to the solo class.
  • Fundamentals class will meet at the designated pool.

FUNDAMENTALS Learn basic strokes & skills used to paddle a canoe safely on a lake, and how to rescue yourself and others.
  • Prerequisites: None.
  • Those under age 11 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
  • Class begins Friday evening with a swim test and an introduction to rescue skills taught in a heated pool. ALL students will be required to either; a) swim or tread water for 3 minutes, or b) present written proof signed by a certified Red Cross Canoeing or Water Safety Instructor that the above test was successfully completed.
  • Saturday & Sunday sessions are from 9:00am to 5:00pm
BASIC RIVER This class begins with a review of skills learned in the Fundamentals Class and then introduces a variety of techniques needed to maneuver a canoe safely on moving water. Classes are held on the Lower American River in Sacramento.
  • A Fundamentals of Canoeing Certificate is required to enroll. Prior canoeing experience may be helpful, but is not sufficient for entry to this class.
  • Minimum Age is 14.
  • Friday night sessions are 6:00pm - 9:00pm at the ARC Chapter House.
  • Saturday & Sunday sessions are from 8:00am - 5:00pm
INTRODUCTION
TO
WHITEWATER
This class introduces you to the fun and excitement of paddling Class II whitewater. Emphasis will be placed on refining boat control, river reading, and rescue.
  • Prerequisite: A Basic River Canoeing Certificate and a recommendation from your instructor is required to enroll in this class.
  • Saturday & Sunday sessions are from 9:00am - 5:00pm on the Coloma to Lotus run of the South Fork of the American River (flow permitting).
SOLO
FUNDAMENTALS
This one day class takes the strokes and maneuvers learned in the tandem class and applies them to a solo canoe. Emphasis is placed on application of strokes and maneuvers from a solo perspective.
SOLO
BASIC RIVER
This one day class teaches how to paddle and maneuver a solo canoe on the easy moving water of the Lower American River. Previously learned strokes and maneuvers are placed in river context. Feel the freedom of controlling your own canoe.
